Meet the Characters
Nick is an unreliable narrator because he's very biased when it comes to everyone else. After a while, he begins to describe Tom in a negative manner which leads us to perceive Tom in a negative way. Contrastingly, he favors Gatsby above anyone else so it leads for the readers to build an attachment and a liking to Gatsby. When he first sees Tom again, he describes him as very manly and even says that he looks full of himself ("arrogant eyes established dominance over his face..." chapter 1, page 7). Nick also likes to drop in many little white lies, one of which being the fact that he thinks that he is the most honest person he knows and that he reserves judgement. In chapter 4, Nick gives several examples as to why he thinks that Jordan Baker is dishonest and careless, and even though he gets romantically involved with her, he swears up and down that he hates careless people. Much of Nick's judgement is also clouded by his friendship with Gatsby. He knew that Gatsby was in an illegal business with Wolfsheim, who fixed the world series, but chose to overlook that because they were very close friends. In chapter 7, nearing the end, Jordan invites Nick into Daisy and Tom's house, and he declines by saying that,"I'd had enough of all of them." At this point, it's still assumed that Gatsby is the one who killed Myrtle, and Nick still chose to side with Gatsby. Whether or not it was loyalty or a poor choice in judgement that still lingers, even after it's believed that Gatsby killed someone, Nick still wanted to defend him.
